Day 1 so far

January 26 2004

Not enough time to write a comprehensive blog entry, but some thoughts from the day so far....

  • As most of you know, I'm part of the core content team for Lotusphere.  So it's always more than a thrill to see the planning come to life.  For those of you blogging reviews of particular sessions, keep it up.  I may have a very good reason to gather feedback from Lotusphere attendees, and the blogs are making a great additional input channel aside from the usual hallway conversations.
  • The general session exceeded my own expectations, even though I've been through the planning every step of the way.  What you don't know is how much work went on behind the scenes, and so great job to Heidi Votaw, Roy Bowen, Brendan Crotty, Baan Al-Shibib, and the rest of the team who made the presentation and demo team look good. :)  I know there's always room for improvement, but I think the overall session worked really well.  One interesting data point I got from a colleague is that most of the attendees sat in their seats the full two hours -- in other words, people weren't leaving nor even getting up to stretch their legs.  While I know not every minute was "engaging", this seems to indicate to me that the overall format, time slices, etc. was a good flow and a model for future events.
  • Not much to report from the press conference, other than that the traditional first question again went to Domingo from Latin America.  Ah, Lotusphere traditions.
  • The afternoon started with the first minor scheduling crisis.  The session STR103, Notes and Domino Futures, was put in too small of a room, and filled up to capacity as did the overflow room.  It's been scheduled for a repeat, Thursday morning at 8:30, in the Dolphin S. Hemisphere I/II (the SIP session that is scheduled there at the moment will be moved to a room in the Swan).
  • I had a press interview with PJ Connelly from InfoWorld, and decided I'd turn the tables and ask him what the technology was behind the two recent occasions where a link to this site has appeared on their news article pages.  He didn't know the answer but promised to find out.
Downtime for a short bit, and then three dinner obligations, plus a hopeful appearance at the product showcase reception.  Yowsa.

If you get a chance, drop by the Research lab. We're demonstrating a Portal-based collaborative RSS reader, and we're using this as a sample feed. ;-)

Great day! But gotta tell you... with all the comments about how the "direction is clear" I was in that crowd trying to get into the Notes and Domino's Future session... and the reason so many were trying to get in is because, for the clients and Business Partners I've talked to, the direction of Notes / Workplace / WebSphere Portals / etc isn't all that clear... And being a Notes guy for over 10 years... I'm actually feeling like quite the confused rookie...

Looks like I'll be in a lot more meetings and labs this week to get my brain straight... must of been the Kareoke from the night before :)

planning to visit the lab on Tuesday.

As for the ND futures session, I understand how important it is, that's why we're repeating it.
