E-mail as workflow, ever think about it?

It was a conversation with Akiba Saeedi, senior marketing manager at Lotus, that helped me put things in perspective.
"Workflow, both structured and ad-hoc, is one of the most key and most underestimated elements of what we do every day," she said. "One of my colleagues was doing a presentation recently, and he pointed out that mail forwarding is one of the most common workflow processes anyone does, ever. You don't even think about that as being a formal workflow process, but it is."
The question is why forwarding, instead of "reply"?
An interesting challenge to conventional wisdom around collaboration.
