Bold battery
January 20 2009
Yesterday was easily the most punishing day I've put my Blackberry Bold through in the last three months. At the end of the day, I still had two blocks of battery life left. I was very surprised.
Now part of this may be that there's not much 3G coverage around here, and my data access wasn't chewing up the battery, but still. It was a very pleasant surprise to not have to run to the charger at some point during the day.

Battery life of any cell phone is greatly affected by non-coverage areas. For example, when you are underground, or in the center of a large building, like the exhibit hall in the Dolphin. When the phone has no signal, it spends a lot of its time and more importantly energy trying to find a cell site. This can greatly reduce your battery life.

But not finding (and not using) 3G seems to have the opposite effect on my phone too.

I was in Vegas last week for CES - EVERYONE who had an Iphone was complaining that 3G was pathetic - i.e. non existent - all over Vegas. Even the AT&T wireless cards were running at 54kb - it was horrible. I found my iphone seemed to get good 3G in most areas in Dolphin and Swan at the BDD this weekend.

Following the Lotusphere from the other side of the world this year..
Turning of 3G on the Bold is known issue...
This will keep your battery in a much better shape.
Even the phone voice quality will improve and you will have better coverage when turning of 3G..

I had good results with the iphone yesterday too, browsing planetlotus all day. Much better than I expected.
