Chris Pepin: Instant Messaging with IBM employees

Since I get asked about extst.ibm.com, a lot...

There are a number of ways for customers and partners to exchange instant messages with IBM employees.  
Chris goes on to document the three ways: direct Sametime connectivity, Extranet Sametime service, and public instant messaging networks.  He also highlights 2009 plans to upgrade the second and third service on that list.

    Ah, extst.ibm.com, that good old Sametime 3.1 Server from 2003. See { Link }

    Will IBM ever get round to upgrading it to something a little newer? I mean, after 5 years its still running Sametime 3.1.

    I have got fed up of asking for it to be upgraded, and for the client connection problems to be fixed. It has had connection problems with various Notes Clients using the Sametime plugin. i.e. it worked fine with the Notes 8.0 Betas, but as soon as the Gold code was released, it was refusing connections again, and it took about 6 months to fix this. Then broken again when 8.0.1 was released, another 6 month wait for a 30 second edit to the sametime.ini file, and guess what happened when 8.0.2 was released... sigh

    I am staggered that it is still running Sametime 3.1 for 2003, and you are trying to get us to IM you with such a crappy old version.

    I have just read Chris Pepins article. Yey, an upgrade on its way! I posted too soon. Ah, but what's this, not until 2009?

    @3 If you waited for as long as we have to get this service sorted out, you'd be glass-half-empty about a 2009 upgrade too!

    Why need the ext server. There are a lot of options like bleeding yellow or the IBM Sametime demo server on { Link } server

    In all cases everyone has to add an additional community.

    I've tried to connect via the 8.0.2 sametime client using extst.ibm.com on port 80 and it does not seem to work. Any other magic needed ?

    I have tested my id on the http site extst.ibm.com and it works. Any help would be much appreciated.
