Chris Whisonant: Exchange Server Has Built-in Viruses
August 28 2007
I picked this up from Chris Whisonant, too much fun...(note, I recreated the graphic and added the red arrow):
This is from the scrolling banner on microsoft.com/exchange. Most of the terms seem to be defining what Exchange does (e-mail, anywhere, automation)...but "built-in viruses"? Must be a unique characteristic of the Exchange market. :-)
Update: It seems that Microsoft has updated the website, and done so within a mere two hours of my blog entry. I assume they've dropped a thank-you gift in the mail to Mr. Whisonant for raising awareness about their website.

BWAHAHAHA
It's *already* changed to "antivirus"

Oh man! I bet Lepofsky it wouldn't be changed until tomorrow!

Well, with all the MS staff dedicated to reading your blog, how could it not get fixed! Then again, we just have to wait a day or two until the next Exchange virus comes around. :-)

I am amused at the slithering way it snakes around, an interesting motif choice.
Does it mean it comes and goes like the wind?
It is winding and misguided like the wind?
Perhaps it is going around the people and represents the forces of life? Or is it avoiding people and finding ways to market that have nothing to do with the people in the picture?
Sometimes the ad guys can overthink something too much.

@5 - Yes Bruce, we all know you support the evil empire during the day, and support all that is good during the night. :)

@Henry,
How right you are......

Thought everyone would like this! Someone sent it to me - I don't just snoop around the Exchange site! :)
See Ed, *you* had to go and point it out and it was changed! ;)

Ed if i post this { Link } on a MS site do you think the IBM feedback team will remove the reference to domino 8 beta forums instead of domino 8 forums :).

Whisonant is my hero! =)

@9: You can bet the competition is snooping around at your site...
Yeah, looks like it says built-in ANTIVIRUS now... Well, that is better to say the least. We've been laughing about this for weeks and were hoping to used it in our "please don't make us go" presentation!

I notice "clustering" and "simple upgrade path" aren't mentioned.

I'd be more impressed if this hadn't been on Fake Steve two days earlier.

well, now we know that it has been making the rounds ... FSJ isn't a blog I've been reading (given its author, reasons should be obvious...)
Anyway -- it still is mighty curious that the fix went in two hours after I picked it up. I am sure FSJ has more readers than I do, but maybe not as many from the Exchange team? :-)

Chris Whisonant http://cwhisonant.blogspot.com | 8/29/2007 1:02:54 PM
@13 - Good points!
I certainly don't read FSJ myself. A friend of mine who is just a Notes user sent it to me on Sunday morning - after it was on FSJ.
I agree Ed - it seems to have only been corrected after you pointed it out. It couldn't have taken them a few days to get that flash video changed, right?

@15... You know, I just KNEW I heard that guy's name somewhere before! NOW it explains how he can be such a horse's a-- all the time! It comes natural to him!

RE: FSJ, as another reader of this blog said to me: It makes sense, he has shown a talent for making things up, this allows him to exercize it.

Ah. Happy memories. About a month before 9/11, I was working on London on an exchange to Notes migration, when the Nimda/d virus (I think) came to play.
As it used outlook as a vector, the ONLY way to stop it infecting all machines was to pull the network cables and kill the routers. For the entire building. For an afternoon, whilst everyone ran around with CD-ROMS.
God, I miss exchange.

@6 - a few ideas:
1. Indicative of the about turns in MS product history and future plans.
2. The twisted path to try you have to navigate to try and integrate MS products into any semblance of a useful solution.
3. A windsock so that you know by which the wind is blowing, what level of service to expect from your Exchange service today.
4. The vapor trail of MS promises.

@20 - I usually don't respond to troll bait, but this is egregious beyond belief.
1) "Two-lane highway" ring any bells? What about Workplace, which was changed from a product line into a "strategy"? AS/400 > eServer (not sure where that fits in here) > iSeries > System i?
2) Domino + Sametime + RTC Gateway + Connections + Quickr + TDI + DB2 + WAS ...
3) R5 and shared mail... care to discuss? That's how far back you have to go to find reliability issues with Exchange.
4) 64-bit Domino? Notes 8.0 on Citrix? A Mac client with feature and version parity? Oh wait, that's 8.01+, even though it's all been talked about for years.
I'm not a Microsoft apologist and I truly don't mean to take you to task, but please stop the mudslinging. Neither Lotus nor IBM has anywhere near a perfect track record on anything you mention, so it's disingenuous and hypocritical to pretend like they do.

@21: Is that LOTR Troll bait or Saab Troll bait? :<)
- 23
David Bell | 8/30/2007 2:46:44 PM
@21 - I have responded to Charles directly via email.
I'm sorry if my comment caused offence. That was not my intent and is not my MO. It was supposed to be a little tongue in cheek fun in line, I believe, with the spirit of the post in general.

"4) 64-bit Domino?"
Huh?

Charles Robinson http://cubert-codepoet.blogspot.com | 8/31/2007 7:57:10 AM
@23 - Thanks, I apologize if I overreacted. I'm just getting a little weary of the nonstop bashing. I don't see that in any of the MS forums I participate in (or at least directed at Notes/Domino).
@24 - I meant on Windows and Linux specifically. It's been a constantly moving target, not unlike many of the MS promises. Again, I didn't mean to take David to task, and I will agree that IBM/Lotus has been very transparent with this particular issue. It still hasn't been delivered, though, and until it is it's just a promise. :)

@22 - I was caught by a Saab Viggen { Link } , so Saab Troll bait doesn't interest me. I guess that makes me a LOTR-type troll. ;-)

@24 - "64-bit Domino?"
Sure. Have you been living in a cave Nathan? I thought everyone knew that when you upgrade to the new release of Domino that you have to rip out all of your old servers and replace them with 64-bit machines. Oh wait... that's the requirement for upgrading to M$ Exchange 2007. The Domino 8 server will run on the same machines as Domino 7. Nevermind :-)

Sure you do , if you need DB2 support you take your Iseries and replace it with a windows box :)

It's actually more visible in the background, just above the railing. hehe.
