Domino XPages and mobile apps at IBM Connect 2013
January 13 2013
With IBM Connect 2013 only two weeks away, I have been spending a lot of time staring at the session grid. One impression that struck me as I surveyed the grid was this: there are a lot of Domino XPages and mobile sessions on the agenda. Just how many?
| Session | When | Where |
| JMP103 : Get the “Jump” on Mobilizing Your IBM Notes and Domino Applications Today! | Sun, 27/Jan 08:00 AM - 10:00 AM | Swan Mockingbird 1 & 2 |

| SPOT103 : Delivering the Offline Mobile Experience with Teamstudio Unplugged | Mon, 28/Jan 05:00 PM - 06:00 PM | Swan Pelican 1 & 2 |

| AD403: Engaging Mobile Apps with IBM Social Business Solutions and IBM Worklight | Wed, 30/Jan 11:15 AM - 12:15 PM | Swan SW 9 - 10 |
| AD404 : NSF2IPA: Delivering Your Existing IBM Domino Application as aMobile App. | Thu, 31/Jan 10:00 AM - 11:00 AM | Dolphin S. Hem II |
Worklight, acquired by IBM last year, is making its first appearance at IBM Connect. There is a hands-on lab available to learn more about using Worklight to bulid social mobile applications using Domino.
| Social Business Solutions Development Lab - WDW Dolphin - Europe 1 & 2 (Check conference guide for lab hours) IBM Worklight and IBM Social Platform Integration Learn how to build a mobile application with IBM Worklight and the IBM Social Platform. You learn how to build a mobile integration using IBM Domino data and present the integration in a custom mobile application. You will use Dojo Mobile within IBM Worklight and create an adapter to Domino using REST services in IBM Worklight. You will also create UI elements for IBM Notes views, documents and camera integration. |
The question remains - how many of you are indeed leveraging Domino as a mobile application server. Is this sub-theme interesting and relevant to your 2013 goals? I think this is an area where we are not doing enough to talk about Domino's benefits and relevance. The sub-theme within the conference should hopefully provide the materials - and proof points - to do so more loudly in the future.

Every customer I looked in the eye in 2012 had one thing in common: they wanted mobile. The mobile controls from the XPages Extension Library allowed me to not only deliver what they wanted, but also to amaze them at how rapidly a mobile interface could be delivered. I anticipate that customer interest in mobile and Domino's capacity to delight them in that regard will continue to increase as 2013 progresses.

I agree with Tim, the controls where an eye-opener in 2011.
However, you cannot develop a complete rich mobile client with them since they lack a lot of functionality.
I would have expected some additional controls for Upgrade Pack 2, maybe more specific for tablets but I fear that is not planned.
Please IBM we are not waiting to place another new system in to deliver mobile solutions (Worklight).

There is also a Birds of a Feather - BOF 206 - "IBM XPages and Appcelerator - A Marriage Made in the Clouds" by John Jardin of Ukuvuma Solutions.
I would link to the session but it is not possible on the IBM site and it is not on vivastream :-(
<a href = "{ Link } is the framework used by Julian Buss at YouatNotes and by Bruce Elgort for <a href="https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/tsazr-share-your-tsa-experience/id413745839?mt=8">TSAzr</a>

Similar to @3 every project I did in 2012 had some requirement for mobile. What I found interesting was that there wasn't a huge budget for the mobile component, it was assumed to be included in whatever the "main" desktop part of the development included. And for this reason I haven't been able to use the mobile controls for anything except one (admittedly large) project. Instead I've been using a responsive CSS framework (namely Bootstrap) to offer an "entry level" mobile experience for very little extra cost.
All still XPages of course so from that point of view XPages is still as mobile as any other development platform.
Two other projects have revolved around the Teamstudio Unplugged mobile interface which is a totally different (and much more full featured) experience.

There's a bit of a theme here, because mobile also makes an appearance in my session with Mike McGarel. The mobile controls are good, but I'm hoping 2013 will bring more mobile controls leveraging more recent versions of Dojo, particularly controls more appropriate to the increased screen real estate of tablets.

I know I have a big focus on mobile at the day job. We've integrated XPages (Mobile controls), with iPads and bluethooth barcode scanners to work with our inventory. Users very happy.

@Tim's post + 1. The Mobile XPages control's don't do it all but the certainly offer the quickest/easiest way to "mobilize" existing Domino apps.
Looking forward to delivering JMP103 with Howard Greenberg. Maybe get just Howard to do that morning session but I'll definitely be there for the afternoon session! :)

My session, BP210 Using a Mobile Approach: Strategies for Mobilizing Your IBM Domino Applications, takes a look at not only the developer's approach to building mobile apps in the Notes and Domino world, but also the things that will impact project managers, infrastructure teams, the help desk and others in terms of the skills and the effect on servers, networks and data plans. Plus we touch on Mobile Device Management and what to consider in terms of your approach to building mobile apps in a BYOD world.

Great info. I will be sure to go to many of those. Of course the other BIG question on everyone's mind is... where is the party going to be this year????
I know that's not REALLY why we go... but it certainly is part of the charm.

We are again providing an XPages hands-on lab https://ibm.biz/BdxMTe
"Learn how to extend your XPages applications using the XPages Social Enabler toolkit to interact with IBM Connections components such as Profiles, Activities and Files. The toolkit can also be used to connect to social services such as IBM SmartCloud Files and IBM Sametime."

Sun & Son with the full support of Phil Riand and the XPages team have completed integrating a Notes JDBC Driver with the Data Modeler and Data Bridge - This is Now being ported to IBM iSeries (It is already on X) and will then be ported to P & Z.
Early perfrmance figs are excellent and the software will be made available to all X Page developers for Free (for Dev purposes) Please go to info at the sunandson web site if you want further information.

I am sure there are even more that don't explicitly mention mobile, but include mobile content. For a random example, my session with David Leedy, SNT111 "XPages: No Experience Needed" has a section on mobile. :-) Totally random, completely unbiased example.
