Why the computer industry is sometimes just plain weird,

It's pretty ironic. Steve Ballmer is going after a company that develops billions of dollars worth of applications and middleware for Windows platforms. What's more, IBM Global Services probably deploys and maintains more Windows systems than anyone else in the world.

In return, IBM is attacking Microsoft, without which it would not have these billion dollar fat-client-oriented revenue streams.

Ah, the IBM-Microsoft rivalry, delightfully bitter, and always entertaining. Until the Yankees and Red Sox officially start their seasons, it will suffice quite nicely.
