An answer to one of the questions asked yesterday at the Minnesota Notes user group meeting...

Notes.exe does the following three main things, then calls Nlnotes.exe:

- it displays the splash screen
- checks to see if Notes is already running (and aborts if so)
- loads Qnc.exe if you have it configured to do so.  ...

While starting the Notes client via the Nlnotes.exe will avoid the splash screen, it is not recommended as it may bypass certain expected operations.
This is quite different in Notes 8, where nlnotes.exe loads the "basic" configuration of Notes 8, while notes.exe loads the standard configuration.
