The press release won't hit for a few hours yet, but both LinkedIn and TripIt have gone live with their new widgets for Lotus Notes.
LinkedIn:
With the new LinkedIn micromashup software capability for Lotus Notes, users can access the world's most popular professional network directly from their desktops. Features include a stream of LinkedIn network updates, people search with one-click, and access to view their LinkedIn Professional profile right within Notes.Visit linkedin.com/lotus for details and to download.
TripIt:
With today's myriad of travel sites, even the most experienced business traveler may find managing trip details a daunting task. TripIt organizes trip details into one master online itinerary, even if arrangements are booked at multiple travel sites. It automatically includes maps, directions and weather into a master itinerary and gives travelers the option to add restaurants, theater tickets, and other activities for the trip.Thank you to Adam Brown from ISW in Australia for providing a great quote for the press release. Visit tripit.com/lotus for details and to download.
Travelers can safely access travel plans online, share them, check-in for flights, or print an itinerary. It even makes it easy for travelers to share and collaborate on travel plans, and to see when their plans overlap so that they can meet-up with people from their professional network.
The press release is now live on ibm.com. Nice line: "Whatever Lotus customers need, there's a widget for that."

This is great news! Now if we could just move the Tungle integration along my life would be complete! :)
Thanks for posting Ed!

The TripIt widget rocks, Ed! Accurately pulled in data for over 40 trips: hotels, flights, rental cars for each. All show in my calendar now. Excellent job.
Also, enjoying the new LinkedIn widget. Very pleased as well. All my contacts appear, I can navigate to their profiles, and pull the full website with a click. Easy to navigate; well-planned gui.
Just ascended to a new level of productivity. If Notes 8 keeps making me more efficient, soon I just might be able to show-up and all my work will be done. ;)
Nice job, Lotus. Thanks for the post, Ed.

The new LinkedIn widget rocks. The pulldown menu gives easy access to all major tasks, well done!

@6 - Haven't used wigets much as yet, but when I drag it to the widget bar it just sits there as an icon.
Guess I am doing/have done something wrong!
Any suggestions?

Not be a Debbie Downer, but where is the contact synch option for the LinkedIn widget? Since LinkedIn is all about connecting, I would hope the plug-in would sync my address book, update the info in my address book with the data (and picture) from LinkedIn, and let me connect with folks in my address book that I am not connected to on LinkedIn now. That is what the competing product plug-ins do.
The LinkedIn plug-in is well designed but missing a core feature.

@8 Agreed. Thats what the iPhone LinkedIn app does as well.

Bart Severein http://www.eniac.nl/essentials | 7/15/2009 7:56:06 AM
@7: Right mouse-click, choose Open in and than choose Sidebar Panel (e.g.)
@8: True, it is great but could be awesome.

Suggestions for the TripIt plug-in:
1. Allow me to "Add to Calendar" for a specific trip, not just everything
2. "Add to Calendar" should not add anything to my calendar before today unless it's for an active Trip
3. We need some way to sync changes to a trip - "Add to Calendar" creates duplicates if I did it again after an initial import.
4. Allow me to connect with folks who are on tripit that are in my address book - without having to copy and paste email addresses
5. Allow me to share a trip with a contact in my address book

Bart Severein http://www.eniac.nl/essentials | 7/15/2009 9:00:50 AM
Although not a sync by all means, and most people already know this: it is very easy to import all your LinkedIn contacts in you address book. Just go to your contacts in LinkedIn, click on the Export Contacts icon at the end of the page. Choose vCard (VCF). Import this file in your address book with File > Import Contacts.

Drew Slothower http://www.dsscorp.com | 7/15/2009 9:08:57 AM
@8: Agreed.
I also thought that there would be integration into memos using Live Text (or something specific to the widget) to display the LinkedIn Profile of the user selected, or email being read. Any such features coming?
- 14
John Head http://www.johndavidhead.com | 7/15/2009 9:09:38 AM
@12 - that creates duplicates if the contact already exists. It also does not import pictures.

Let me know if it's just me, but why isn't the linkedin widget showing up as a sidebar pane instead of in the widgets pane? When I open it it pops up with another window, not that I mind, but at that point, why is it different than using a browser? Because livetext opens it up is great, but I would prefer it to open in the window pane.

never mind, found it

Bart Severein http://www.eniac.nl/essentials | 7/15/2009 9:31:36 AM
@14, I know (hence 'not a sync by all means') But it also shows most elements to make an automated sync are present.

It's great (Just used the LinkedIn widget).
Now... next step... the SalesForce connect tool from salesforce is poor.
LotusLive + Salesforce was already announced.. given the relationship can we get a good and up to date widget for Notes/Saleforce ?
Can you push for this ?

@8: Its the next highest priority (though not simple) feature in queue.. Hopefully won't be long.
@11: Actually if you're running Notes 8.5 you want to subscribe to the URL and not directly import the ICS file. TripIt is working on getting this updated so that it walks you through adding the feed vs d/l and import the trip directly. iCal overlay in 8.5 is great.

Tripit worked well out of the box. I like it.
LinkedIn widget came up with a very small box asking whether i wanted to cross certify to the linkedin website - but the box was so small you couldnt see what the error/prompt was - I managed to avert disaster via some obscure trickery. It works.
All we need now is the Salesforce plugin - where is it! It was supposed to be in the Summer 09 release, but thats now been and gone. Will we ever see it? One more reason to switch to Google Apps - we get salesforce integration out of the box.

Bart Severein http://www.eniac.nl/essentials | 7/16/2009 1:53:07 AM
@22: I saw that on a Ubuntu installation too, and no way to click on a button because it was off-window. The trick was to choose an option (contacts in my case) from the pulldown menu, which causes a larger error-window with buttons to click.
BTW, the Feedback menu option gives "LinkedIn is currently unavailable while we make upgrades to improve our service to you."

GarryL | 7/16/2009 3:26:31 AM
@10 Thanks for the feedback. Still no joy I'm afriad. When I right-click on the icon the only options are 'Remove Component and actions' and 'Email To'.
I don't think it's the widget as others seem to be managing ok. Guess I should look into how this needs to set up.
- 25
Pat Robbins | 7/16/2009 8:22:40 AM
I to have the only options on the LinkedIn widget of 'Remove Component and Actions' I am getting 'CWPPR0503I: The installation of feature com.linkedin.feature_0.2.0 was cancelled'. I checked linkedin for any documentation and cant find it. Any help would be appreciated.

Huh. It's great to have sites release things for Notes, so I don't want to be a killjoy, but ...
I was expecting something more than a very small web browser window pointing to optimized html from these. I thought there'd be, you know, integration with Notes.

David Hablewitz - Notes guy in Seattle | 7/16/2009 3:52:10 PM
@24 & @25. Did you close and restart Notes?
- 28
GarryL | 7/16/2009 4:22:36 PM
@27 I got it in the end. Had to uninstall, restart and then install again.
As per @26 I was also expecting more of a widget rather than HTML. Still good to have though.
- 29
David Bell | 7/16/2009 10:39:35 PM
@26 / @28 - the significant benefit of that kind of integration is that the vendor (e.g. tripit) can change the backend (say rebranding or change the layout) without someone having to recode the plugin to match and update the desktop.
- 30
Rob McDonagh http://www.CaptainOblivious.com | 7/17/2009 12:24:29 PM
Sure, and it's also easier and cheaper to build. I'm not saying the approach has no benefits, I'm only saying that it doesn't impress me or meet my needs. I installed the widgets, checked then out, and uninstalled them because they don't provide any value to me. That's not to say other people don't find value - obviously plenty do.

Theo Heselmans http://blog.xceed.be | 7/26/2009 1:23:00 PM
Being new to LinkedIn, I tried to download the widget from that site. When I click the button, it shows a EULA screen to be confirmed, but there is no button to confirm, so no download ??
Any ideas ?
- 32
Justin Cooney | 7/27/2009 12:29:18 PM
Theo, I have same issue. I don't see any button to press to accept the terms and conditions. Tried in both Firefox and IE to no avail.

Linkedin Widget is waste of time! It has NONE of the functionality of the Outlook add-in. What was the point of this? A sidebar thinger for Linkedin's home page? Whoop-de-friggin-doo. To think they actually spent money to develop this... What a waste.

Paul | 9/25/2009 8:57:11 AM
Ed - thanks for sharing this. I'm up and running with the widget, but feel like I'm missing something. The advertising for this widget indicates that you can "Quickly learn more about people who send you email" ... and the screenshot implies that if you click an e-mail, LinkedIn will automatically display that individual's LinkedIn profile (if they have one). However, this doesn't seem possible. It appears that any connection is fully manual. Could you clarify? Thank you!
Paul

Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com | 9/25/2009 7:50:34 PM
for now, you are right.

IMHO, Lotus could really do with an Widget Store/WidgetCenter.. to make the whole thing a bit easier for users. It could include Notes templates as well...
Sure I know you have the old Sandbox (er, I think) but a store approach would make Notes app install even easier....
