Breaking news! IBM has announced the beta release of Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5.1 collaboration software, including plans to support Apple iPhone in version 8.5.1 of Lotus Notes Traveler. You can preview this capability exclusively in the Lotus Greenhouse! The Lotus Notes Traveler 8.5.1 beta is now live on the Greenhouse. You can test drive the beta of our Apple iPhone support along with Windows Mobile and Nokia S60 devices.
You'll find the full details of how the Lotus Notes Traveler implementation for iPhone works there. The Traveler team did a nice job of documenting known issues, workarounds, and things to be aware of. They wrote the documentation from the perspective of a Notes/Traveler user, as opposed to assuming that the user already knows the limitations of the iPhone mail/calendar application.
Feedback so far has been great -- let me know what you think!

If you speak Dutch, this blog entry might be useful as a summary of how the Greenhouse beta is working...

Hi Ed, do you see any chance to have Traveler for Domino on Linux?

Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com | 5/19/2009 8:18:00 AM
@3 it's in our long-term strategy but won't be at 8.5.1.

Hi Ed,
must be the Domino Server with Traveler in the same Domino Domain as the Mail Server?
Best regards,
Frank

Hi Ed,
@3 - Is there a chance that Traveler on Linux will be released in 2009? If so, when? I have a customer that is pure Linux and would hate to tell them they need a windows box for this "free" addon...

it's not likely to happen in 2009, no.

Ed-
It looks like the current edition of Traveler 8.5.1 at Greenhouse only supports the iPhone via ActiveSync. Are there plans to support more than just Apple's limited implementation? I was hoping that ActiveSync support would eliminate the need for installing the Traveler "middleware" on other devices and perhaps quickly open support to new devices that will probably get decent support in business circles like the Palm Pre.
In my testing w/ the Pre, although it's possible to authenticate with the Traveler server, the sync profiles do not get created correctly on the device. Palm only sold ~100K of these in the first two days and there are already a lot of people looking for more than IMAP / desktop-based PIM sync access to Domino.

I second Gregg's comment; support for non-iPhone devices would be great. And the Palm Pre is indeed the phone I'm considering. Supporting a "standard protocol" (even if it is Microsoft proprietary) can give you immediate support of many devices -- even new ones just arriving on the market. Way more coverage (and market penetration) than you'll ever get attempting to port client software to every new device.

Will remote name lookup be available in 8.5.1?

For iPhone, yes we are planning this. For other devices, in a future release.

We haven't announced a formal ship date but IBM is projecting to ship sometime in the next couple of months

Should we be expecting Traveler 8.5.1 as part of Domino 8.5.1 GA

yes.

We have migrated to Notes Traveler from Intellisync and its a great solution for our Nokia smartphones (and the price is right). We have also tested the beta and iphone, and this also looks great.
The only major issue when compared to Intellisync etc (with the Nokia/Symbian ver at least) is the lack of access to the Domino Global Address book - effectively asking all users to maintain a duplicate copy of the Global Address book in their private address book is unfortunately sub-optimal ..
Hi Ed,
Is there a way to escalate the idle ECR relating to this issue:

Bill, we know about this limitation. Some solutions being worked; initially for iPhone, eventually for all. Not for Nokia in 8.5.1 for sure, but a priority for subsequent release.

Hi Ed,
are we going to see any support to the android platform via Traveler? (ActiveSync?)
Thx.

We are considering Android for a future release of Traveler. Until recently, demand has been relatively low.

Hi Ed,
I have to agree with Bill, the lack of Domino Directory access or any other style of shared address book is a huge restriction, its a real shame as I use traveller in a testing scenario and it works very well.
We are also very interested in Android, i hope you do support it in future releases.

Yes, we also need Linux support. We request more Linux and Open Standards from Lotus in all. The times they are changing. Thanks for getting a team working on Traveler 8.5.x for Linux.

We are running Androids, iPhones, Nokia's, Blackberries and Windows Mobile over here. Mixed. Like the Market really is.

Hi
Future release for android? Can you estimate approximately? I have a current HTC with a android platform and there is no real current market that i can see to enable Lotus notes syncronisatino with android smartphones.
thanks

Traveler should have been released on all OS's Domino supports. Not too keen on exposing a windows box for traveler

Just wanted to add my vote for Android support to help increase the demand :-)

Works great, the whole "deletes all contacts if you use bootstrap" scared me a bit. So I did it manually and left the contacts off.. its my private iPhone, so....:)
Working smoothly...wanna test it in my work environment :-)
How about August instead of September?
