An updated beta of Sametime 7.5 has now been posted...UI has even more cleanup, and everything just feels a lot smoother than earlier betas.  Check it out.... (Thanks, Stu)

    yep agree cleaned up good and works nicely. But out out of 4 machines I installed on 2 failed with an installsheld error (1607 I think), 1 installed perfectly and 1 installed and configuered OK, BUT displayed NSL ..... ..... ..... where ever there should be any form of menu. So I still think we have some way to go. If any one has seen this install shield error and has solved would love to here. I have done everything on the installshield web site but still not work.

    Just make sure you completely uninstall the Beta 2 client first. This means that you should also delete the c:\program files\IBM\Sametime Connect 7.5 folder. I didn't get that error, but had some other issues.

    no problems here, beta 2 never installed

    Concur with Chris. I didn't do this. Bad Things happened.

    Big improvement in speed on Beta 3. Much more usable. I also really like the UI tweaks. Looks a lot smoother. Too bad NCES isn't using 7.5. :)

    Well, Beta 3 looks and acts much better, but still, bugs happen :) nothing unusual here!

    But I want to ask a bit different question! Can you give us some comments on Tablet PC support in Sametime and Hannover?

    Installed just fine. Does anyone know how to preview what your business card will look like? And what about getting the spellcheck underline to ONLY appear after you hit space? :-)

    @ALL

    Thanks for the uninstall Beta2 first tip! I was VERY confused until you set me straight.

    So, when will the Beta3 Release Notes actually reference Beta3 instead of Beta2?

    Something is up with the Mac version. You download a .command file (never seen a .command installer before) and get an error:

    The .command file ‘/Users/bskelton/Desktop/sametime-connect-mac-7.5.0.command’ could not open. Most likely it is not executable.

    WTF? Tried downloading in both Safari and Firefox. I hope the quality of the download isn't foreshadowing of the quality of the entire beta :(

    Right. It is not executable. This post { Link } explains to problem and the solution.

    That should have been "the problem". You will see that IBM has not fixed this issue from beta 2 to beta 3.

    Running Beta 3 now, quite surprised how much client functionality is enabled without server side support.

    Not seen the spell checker do anything yet though :O(

    I had to use windows IE to download it. Firefox on Linux and on Windows brought up an audio dialog window instead of a download dialog box. Actually, Linux Firefox could not even login - the login page did not change to the stcenter.nsf page, but I could type in the URL by hand. I was able to psftp it over from XP to Linux after I got it.

    The RPM install worked, although it was silent. Sametime 7.5 launched and so far has worked perfectly. I have not had enough time to play with the Linux version, but I am looking forward to July 24th for the Notes 7 client.

    Finally got it working using the instructions to make the .command file an executable... The Mac version needs a lot of work! Have a little review on my blog.

    Ben, it would be nice if you could elaborate a bit beyond what I had already explained on my site. And if you would (a) tell your readers about the chmod command or (b) link to my explanation, they would not be as lost as you where when encountering the same problem.

    ... as you were ... :-)

    @9, @10, @11

    I guess this is one of the tough things about writing software for OS/X. Its a unix microkernal with layer upon layer of API. Where do I write to. At the install level, I guess it was easiest to build yet another shell script installer like IBM/Lotus has done for years on Linux, AIX, Solaris and HPUX.

    Even though I can recall having to make the 4.6.5 Solaris Domino install script executable, and routinely do that on all sorts of installers, Domino, Notes and all other vendors (its fairly common yet annoying.)

    But since they got it right (made RPM install the script as executable) on the Linux version, perhaps, with your urging, they will set the x bit for us in the production version. Here's hoping, because I really suspect slightly more than half of all Mac OS/X owners really abhor the idea of submitting unix commands in character mode windows. The rest probably are linux / unix devotees who latched on the Mac because it has the best user interface and the easiest toolset to live in.

  1. 18  Volker Weber http://vowe.net |

    Bill, the script does not install anything. It just unpacks a disk image. Which is the normal delivery mechanism for Mac applications.

    @14 Harsh words, but sadly true. The Mac version is lagging way behind the PC version. It's not even Beta quality yet.

    The only thing that appears to have changed between Betas 2 and 3 is that the text is now easier to read. (It was microscopic on Beta 2). None of the problems that I reported on the test site's forum have been fixed, and that includes the nightmare installation process.

    I don't know how many betas are left, but I'd be ashamed to demonstrate this as a Beta 3 product.

    Cheers,

    - Mike

    @12 - Re: spellchecker. It's kind of funny to me. If I write "I like the new Sametime IM software", then both "Sametime" and "IM" would be misspelled words! I've seen some other funny, standard tech words that don't quite make it. ;)
