After the whirlwind tour through ANZ last month, I had several requests for copies of my presentation.  We could (or did) post them on each user group's website, but that wouldn't reach everyone.  So the Lotus team asked me if I could post the slides somewhere else more accessible, like perhaps on edbrill.com.

Just as that note hit my inbox, Steve Castledine wrote about a new service called SlideShare.  This is the perfect approach to posting my presentations, rather than just download the PPT or ODF-based files.  Voila, here it is!

Note to those who attended the presentations live: I have removed or changed just a couple of slides for public posting.  Some of the materials I used were specific to particular locations, so this set of slides is the common one used in all of the meetings last month.

Nice technology SlideShare...yet its a little small for the fine type. I don't see a way to open it in a main window and the magnifier's not a user friendly way to view slide details. It still would be preferable to have a download link to get the PDF/PPT. Sometimes these slides become part of my internal marketing campaigns for upgrades, aquisitions, and new ways to use Notes.

Agreed that having access to the source file is also needed. I'm beginning an effort to show the value for upgrading to Hannover and would like to weave some of your information into my presentation.

very nice, I like that even if I second these previous comments regarding the screen rendering, it's a very smart approach to distribute valuable content on a 'managed' manner

All nice and well, this new-fangled SlideShare stuff. But I'm with Roland, where's the "full screen" or at least the "make this stuff large enough to be readable" button?

Adding my tuppence; have to agree with Roland - it's hard to get an impression of those screen shots when they're 1cm cubes...

Add my name to the hat. You could increase the size of the Shockwave applet and it would be fine, but sized as it is it's just too small to be read.

    Ed,

On slide number 2 you state that you are now number 2 with a > 40% market share. Has this changed recently? I thought you guys were always number 1?

Gartner reported MS taking the #1 position in the report covering 2004. I ack'd this in the "boss loves MS" presentation at LS2006. FWIW, there was no material change in IBM's share from 2004 to 2005.

On the Slideshare site itself, you can view the presentations in full screen mode. Look for the button on the bottom right (this is only available on the slideshow within the site).

Ed, while the presentation works well on the site it doesn't work so well in my aggregator (as I prefer to read all my feeds locally). Would it be possible to include a link to a download for those of us who catch up on such presentations and reading offline. Many thanks.

We are trying to create some kind of Lotus society in Poland. We are building news division on our website in order to keep our clients and associates update with Lotus technology.

Our english version of website is not updated as often as polish is, because we keep this marketing education in our native market.

According to above - is it possible you could send me your PPT presentation in order to have it translated into polish on published on our website?!

  1. 13  Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com |

@All the PDF of this presentation is going to be posted on the IBM Australia events website. When I get the link, I'll add it here.

@12 I tend not to send the native powerpoint version of my presentations out, but I will send you an e-mail to discuss.

  1. 14  Charles Robinson http://cubert-codepoet.blogspot.com |

@11 - I tried that yesterday and it never loaded.

@Ed - If we have questions or comments about this proposal should we address them here on your blog or via e-mail?

  1. 15  Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com |

@14 about the presentation? I guess it depends on the question :-) You can post it here.

  1. 16  Charles Robinson http://cubert-codepoet.blogspot.com |

@15 - Yeah, I meant presentation, that's what I get for trying to multitask.

Slide 20 - Benefits of the new [Hannover] interface - "But, a counter-driver for Notes upgrades". Are you saying the new interface will keep some people from upgrading? I can understand that it might, I just want to make sure I'm clear on your meaning.

Slide 31/33 - Domino Next Themes - "World class portal-based user experience" It starts out calling this a Domino theme then goes on to talk about Websphere Portal. In reading slide 33 it sounds like this is Websphere Portal with Domino applications embedded. Am I reading that wrong? If not, I don't understand how this could be construed as a Domino feature.

On a related note, people have been asking for an easy way to deploy corporate welcome pages for years, and we got rudimentary functionality to do it in 6 or 6.5. The current implementation is awkward to use and makes upgrading difficult. Is there any plan to improve that, or will the suggested solution be to deploy Websphere Portal and surface the Domino information there instead?

Slide 32- Domino Support for "Hannover" Client

    - What do resilient threaded views do? This is the first time I've seen them mentioned.

    - "Server-managed Clients" If someone already has Eclipse installed will this install a second copy? Do Sametime 7.5 and Hannover use the same base install of Eclipse? Personally I have some semantic problems with calling it "server-managed" since the level of management is pretty limited, but that's just me whining. :P

    - Since this specifically says "front-end class support for Property Broker" it leads me to believe there will be back-end classes. Where are they, or do they not matter?

To be more specific, do composite applications require the use of Websphere Portal? I kept hearing about composite applications at Lotusphere, and every time I started asking questions the IBMer or Loti would say "you can put a portlet or J2EE app here". When I pointed out that I don't use Websphere or Websphere Portal the conversation trailed off. So can a composite application use only Domino and Domino databases?

  1. 17  John Head http://www.johndavidhead.com |

@16 Charles, you do not need Websphere Portal for composite applications ... but since WP6 added composite apps, you can do some different things if you have portal there. So its not a requirement, just different options.

  1. 18  Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com |

    @16 some good questions...

    >" Are you saying the new interface will keep some people from upgrading? "

Not quite...more that a new user interface requires user retraining, and many customers tell us that they would prefer not to spend that money on training just for a new UI. With all the innovations though, then things start to have real -value- in the upgrade equation.

    >"In reading slide 33 it sounds like this is Websphere Portal with Domino applications embedded. Am I reading that wrong? "

Well, yes. What it is describing is the ability to use portal constructs as the web interface for Domino applications... as opposed to the current out-of-the-box experience for Domino apps. This one will be a lot clearer when there is code and doc to go along with it...

    >"resilient threaded views " -- this one deserves a new entry

    >"Do Sametime 7.5 and Hannover use the same base install of Eclipse"

Yes, Sametime and Notes will run in the same base install. I can't answer the question about a second copy -- I'll find out.

  1. 19  Charles Robinson http://cubert-codepoet.blogspot.com |

@17 - Thanks, that makes me feel a little better. I'm really hoping Lotus does more to improve the portal capabilities of Domino. Modifying bookmark.ntf is such a pain in the...

@18 - Thanks for the responses. :) I realize I'm asking some really technical questions and the product isn't even fully developed yet.

  1. 20  John Head http://www.johndavidhead.com |

@19 Charles - they did show some more portal like features in Domino at Lotusphere 2006, but that has nothing to do with bookmark.ntf. I havent heard anything around the bookmark database, but I know people have been pushing for more info on what's new in the server, myself included. Check next Wednesday for something that might help (insert evil grin)

  1. 21  scott http://thebigredshark.com |

Ed, was thinking that there is a lot of coverage of the new Hannover client - your slide showing having 15 or so slides for Hannover - but only 5 re Domino.Next.

Is the overhaul of Domino going to be as radical as the client .. ?? I'm sure it will be but is there any more detail available .. Scott

  1. 22  Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com |

@21 - actually no... the client is the "radical overhaul" in this release...the promise when ND6.5 shipped is that IBM would start alternating focus -- client (6.5) then server (7.0) then client (Notes "Hannover"). So while there are server enhancements -- and many more beyond what's in these slides -- it's not as major an update as the client. That way you don't have to absorb a whole new infrastructure at once.

  1. 23  Remote slideshow technology - another one http://www.zohoshow.com/jsp/zoho_login.jsp# |

Saw this refernce to \Zoho Show slide presentation for remote use on Michael Sampsons site. It uses Ajax

Oliver Rist on Techworld.nl tried it out as part of an experiemt to use only web based applications for a whole week

    Why Zoho Show?

Currently additional tools are required to give remote presentations. With Zoho Show, it's easy to create and show presentations remotely. No need for any additional tools to give remote presentation
