Very happy to see this asset go live on the web earlier this week...

The focus of this Redbooks Wiki is to help you understand improvements in IBM Lotus Domino 8.5 as a web development platform. The primary focal point is the introduction of XPages in IBM Lotus Domino 8.5 and discussing how XPages dramatically shortens the learning curve for Notes and Domino developers. Not only do XPages now allow you to incorporate Web 2.0 features and functionality into your web applications, but XPages continue to leverage your existing Domino development skills, while intuitively incorporating new design element features.

    Agreed - Declan's tutorial is pretty good but it's about time something more formal came out.

    Thanks, Ed. An strategic question for my company. Will Lotus Notes 8.5.2 come with Symphony 3.0 built in ???

    That depends on timing for both the maintenance release and Symphony 3.0. We are also working on a plug-in installer so that Symphony updates can be deployed into existing 8.5.x Notes clients.

    How does this play with Lotus Foundations? As a novice Business Partner (but long-time Notes developer), I've been playing with the LF box, largely because I want to be able to develop Domino apps for clients.

    However, as best I can tell, to develop a Domino app for LF requires that you also have a "true" Domino server/ID, then you go through various gyrations in order to port it/host it on the LF box.

    Any plans to simplify/deploy the new XPages technology for Foundations without having to buy additional server licenses?

    Of course, maybe I've misunderstood the process, but that's how I understand it from the on-line documentation and the sessions I attended at Lotusphere '9.

    P.S. Thanks for keeping us up to date on all this good stuff. The people at my day job are being pushed to replace over a decade of great Notes apps with, *ahem*, MS Sharebloat. Meanwhile, until I get the word and the training to do otherwise, I'll continue to tout the many strengths of Notes and Domino.

    @4 At this time, Foundations 1.1 is running Domino 8.5 under the covers. While this version does have xPages support, you have to think of it as xPages 1.0 and not completely cooked. There were major changes to the xPages engine in 8.5.1 and many early adopters had to rework their pages in the newer version.

    I would expect that the next version of Foundations would include Domino 8.5.1 and xPages support, but nothing has been released from IBM.

    As far as licensing goes, there is no need for additional licensing beyond the normal Foundations user license to be able to develop applications in Domino Designer. The Designer client can be downloaded freely from IBM and you can use your Notes ID supplied by your Foundations server in that client.

    Good to hear that there is going to be a plug-in installer for Symphony on Notes 8.5.x. My company has turned down the budget for moving to Office 2007 / 2010 as we don't have Software "Assurance." We do have Notes 8.5.1 company wide though.

    @5 - Are you sure about the licensing for Designer? My understanding was that the Domino Enteprise CAL included an entitlement to deploy Domino applications. Per the client licensing page { Link } : "Each developer who will build and deploy applications with Lotus Domino Designer software in a Lotus Domino or Lotus Domino Express environment must have a Lotus Domino Enterprise CAL."

    @5/7 I'm not sure of the Designer licensing vis-a-vis Foundations. I can look into that.

    @8 - Thanks for following up. :-)
