As the third and final new release for this week (and this year), today there is a new release of Notes/Domino available on Passport Advantage.

Image:New releases week, part 3: Notes/Domino 8.5.3 Upgrade Pack 1

Product Manager Pete Janzen explains the new Upgrade Pack 1 on the Social Business Blog:

Upgrade Pack 1 contains the following:

        •        Domino XPages Extension Library
        ◦        Includes new set of mobile specific XPages controls and other assets
        •        Updated templates built with controls in Extension Library
        ◦        TeamRoom: XPages UI including mobile access
        ◦        Discussion: new mobile access
        •        Domino Access Services: New set of JSON based REST services for accessing Domino data

For over a year, developers have been utilizing the XPages Extension Library (ExtLib) from OpenNTF.org to build rich web applications on IBM Lotus Notes and Domino and IBM XWork Server. While this gave developers a vast set of capabilities to build applications, many have requested they become a supported feature set of the product. Today, with the release of Lotus Notes and Domino 8.5.3 Upgrade Pack 1, developers building applications for IBM Lotus Notes and Domino and IBM XWork Server have that support.

    Cool. Was looking forward to that release.

    Great job, for delivering this so soon!

    I'm very excited to hear that the ExtLib is now a supported feature of the product but it opens a couple of questions for me...

    What version of the ExtLib is included in the Upgrade pack?

    What impact will the release of a supported version of the ExtLib have on the development path for the OpenNNF version?

    Downloading now...thanks!

    Also I have the same curiosity as Steve.

    Anyone a part no.? It's a pita to find it on PA.

  1. 5  Per Henrik Lausten http://PHL-Consult.dk |

    Great news for XPages - and for the adoption of XPages!

    PN = CI5GIEN

    We will be providing screen shots for the PA experience in the install doc I mention in the dW post

    Great news!

    Can't seem to find it on PA, a part number would be most helpful.

  1. 8  Jakob Majkilde http;//xpages.dk |

    Ah - needed that :-) Part no = CI5GIEN

    @Steve - There is no OpenNTF ExtLib equivalent to what is included in Upgrade Pack 1 although everything included in Upgrade Pack 1 will go into an OpenNTF release very soon.

    We will continue to deliver new features and fixes to the OpenNTF ExtLib and then harvest new features and enhancements in a future Upgrade Pack.

    Great news, the Extension Library has been a great addition. The mobile interfaces for the TeamRoom and Discussion apps look great, but more importantly also give nice examples of mobile development with the Extension Library.

    Congrats to the team for getting this out the door. I reported a bunch more when they did the webcast on the enhancements found { Link }

    Hi Ed, thank you for your presentation in Stockholm this week. I believe you received a question from the audience when the other templates will be in XPages?

    Today I received an incident on the Domino Wiki project on OpenNTF. When I looked at the project page it says it is still in version 0.06 so there was never a official release.

    - When are you guys making some effort to remove all defects from these IBM templates?

    You can say a lot of good things about XPages and possibilities in the Extension Library but fix the errors in the templates first and bring the ones not on XPages (e.g. Blog template) to the new technology.

    Compared with other collaborative platforms IBM does a really bad job here. Sending out half-baked applications to customers.

    In case the newer templates should cover all the registered problems on OpenNTF, please update the available templates there (with the one I assume you ship with the server installation). Because otherwise it brings confusion.

  1. 13  Steve Pridemore  |

    @9 Thanks for the info but I'm a little confused. Does the included ExtLib contain all of whats in the openNTF version? If not can they both be loaded on the server to use the parts that are not in the included version? I am assuming that the com.ibm.xsp.extlibx.library wont be included but com.ibm.xsp.extlib.library will. Is that an accurate assumption?

  1. 14  Per Henrik Lausten http://PHL-Consult.dk |

    @Steve, from the installation instructions at { Link } it says:

    "You can install supplemental experimental plug-ins, but ensure they do not conflict with existing plug-ins from the upgrade pack".

    @Rob and Steve - I'm pulling this apart in preparation for our Lotusphere session (re-writing slides as we go along!) It's listed internally as 8.5.3.20111208-0717 which is later than anything on OpenNTF.org

    However, installing this is significantly different to the Extension LIbrary.... More details in January!

    @Patrick Well spoken!

  1. 17  Patrick Kwinten http://quintessens.wordpress.com |

    @Adrian,

    as a customer we feel being let down by IBM supporting a basic application portfolio program with collaborative solutions on Notes Domino.

    What do we get?

    Mail (release 8.5x)

    Blog (release 8 not on xpages)

    Doc Libraries (release 7)

    Teamroom (release 7)

    Discussion (release 8.5x)

    Other templates via OpenNTF are full or errors, which you sometimes regret to use because of the incidents users report.

    This is a reason why another competitive collaboration platform has entered our organisation and pushing us aside. Of course we could take a look at connections which IBM really prefers but that station we have passed, we store that information in a shared point...

    So, if there is an application portfolio program for Notes at IBM, what does it look like, who is responsible for it and who can we contact?

  1. 18  Alan  |

    Very impressed with the mobile controls and the example TeamRoom and Discussion templates are a great starting point for our Devs to look at using the controls to mobilise other Domino apps. Great addition to the Domino portfolio.

  1. 19  Bill Geimer  |

    I cannot recall a week in the history of Notes where so much rolled out the door at once. Congrats. Bill G.

    This topic may be closed now but I'll ask anyway. What is the upgrade path to obtaining Upgrade Pack 1 if someone is using the free Designer client?

  1. 21  Gloria Flaherty  |

    If you are at Lotusphere, stop by the ICS Development Lab { Link } . One of our labs is showcasing the Upgrade Pack 1. You can learn to develop a mobile app with Mobile Controls or develop an Android native application with DDS. You can choose or both.

    Would you happen to know why IBM included the OpenNTF TeamRoom template in their Uprade Pack 1 but left our OpenNTF Document Library template? We are using Document Libraries a lot, and we were very excited about the new Web interface based on the Xpages. It looks great, unfortunatelly, we run into a bug. IBM Tech support closed the PMR as "OUTSIDE SCOPE OF SUPPORT".
