Earlier today, Nokia announced the new E72:

Swift, slim and resourceful are three words that accurately describe the new Nokia E72, which was unveiled at the Nokia Connection event in Singapore today. Nokia's latest full QWERTY smartphone brings a rich mobile email and instant messaging experience right out of the box, making it the ideal device for people that want to be productive in both their personal and professional lives.
I was especially happy to see this in the press release:
On top of these developments, for the first time, owners will be able to set up instant messaging (IM) accounts provided by Nokia Messaging direct from the homescreen. ...These new IM features are complimented by Nokia's range of email solutions with a lifetime license for Nokia's mobile email and IM service, Nokia Messaging, as well as onboard clients for Mail for Exchange and IBM Lotus Notes Traveler.
The Nokia E72 thus becomes the very first mobile device to feature out-of-the-box support for Lotus Notes Traveler.  The Lotus brand and Nokia teams are proud of this milestone.  Can't find any screen shots that feature this support yet, but when I get them, I'll update this post.

    Great to see IBM Lotus Traveler pre-installed along with Mail for Exchange on the lastest E series devices. Support for S60 Fifth Edition UI is planned, so that should include the latest N Series touch devices.

    E72 is going to be a massive hit, particular in Europe as its comes with a 5MP cam, touch optical pad, 3.5mm headphone jack, faster 3G speeds of up to 10.2Mbps downstream and 2Mbps upstream, GPS that adds compass support and active noise cancellation. A new version of the pre-loaded document viewer now supports Office 2007's formats out of the box.

    WOW - i sounds like a Nokia sales person, or just excited by this phone :)))

    Congrats. That is great news for Lotus and Nokia.

    Ed, will the N97 support Traveler ?

    @3 all Nokia S60-based devices work with Lotus Notes Traveler....that includes the N97. The only difference with the E72 is that the Traveler local component is pre-installed.

    @ED and @3 N97 runs Nokia's S60 Fifth Edition UI.

    The Lotus Traveler 8.5 email editor application does not have Touch UI support, IBM development are working on adding 5th edition Touch support and officially supporting in the near future.

    With the Nokia N97 and 5800XM devices you cannot compose a new mail and if you reply, the cursor will be in the email body automatically and you can type, but cannot move between fields.

    This could be easily fixed if Traveler would support Exchange Active Sync on Nokia devices as well, instead of only iPhone/iPod. And of course on Windows Mobile, the Palm Pre, the just announced Samsung Jet, and whatever comes with EAS.

    Let no good deed go unpunished, once again. I think it's a huge deal that, after years of being told that IBM was behind by not being installed by default, here we are installed by default on a device. We implemented SyncML for Traveler and built just enough code to make the experience seamless for users. On the iPhone, we implemented ActiveSync because it's what the device's native client uses, and there's no other way to leverage that native client. So, different approaches for different devices.

    I will take the win on the E72 and apologize for not fully understanding the N97.

    It's "complemented by", not "complimented by"!

    Complement, with an "e" because it compleeeetes something.

    Harrumph.

    Ed, there are folks out there that would complain if you gave them a free puppy that they'd have to walk and feed it.

    Pre-installed == major win. Well done.

    Er, Ed, aren't you supposed to be on vacation?

    With Lotus Symphony now pre-installed on some NetBooks and Traveler appearing on mobile devices, this is definitely movement in the right direction. Excellent news, Ed.

    @5 Thomas, can this only be introduced at a maintenance release ? It would be a shame to miss that window and have to wait for 8.5.2 - actually it would be a shame to even have to wait for 8.5.1

    Tks, Sean

    Great news Ed!

    Now that we have the first one, I'm sure the rest will follow..

    @4 Ed, "all Nokia S60-based devices work with Lotus Notes Traveler"

    I'm not 100% sure but I think you need to rephrase this to something like "all newer Nokia S60 3rd edition based devices work with Lotus Notes Traveler".

    Nevertheless, this is GREAT news!

  1. 16  Volker Weber http://vowe.net |

    Andrew, I think it is:

    * Series 60 3rd edition

    * Series 60 3rd edition feature pack 1

    * Series 60 3rd edition feature pack 2

    So, it's not only newer 3rd edition based devices.

    Very good to see. Let's hope this is the beginning of an actual pattern and that there will be many more smartphones to come preloaded with Lotus Traveler.

    Great news! Will be really impressed when/if it is preinstalled on BlackBerry devices.

  1. 19  Chris Whisonant http://www.bleedyellow.com/blogs/lotusnut |

    @18 - will never be on BB - the BES infrastructure is too advanced and IBM has a close allegiance with RIM.

    Awesome news to hear - anytime we can get this in front of people it's a huge boost. "Hey, I use Lotus Notes at work - you mean I could use that phone with that?" Excellent! And I'm sure more companies will be looking at Traveler.

    By the way, just to play devil's advocate a bit, but hasn't the iPhone had all the necessary software pre-installed for around a year now? ;) BTW, Traveler ROCKS!!!! :D

  1. 20  Dave Harris http://www.wavysworld.com |

    @19 Chris, I'll certainly agree it looks good, but rocks? Hmmm. I was looking at it recently, since Digi (Malaysian telco) have a deal with unlimited data and a free E65 (I think) and Sametime license. The big BUT for me though, was the filtering, ie, selecting what actually gets to the handset. It didn't seem to easy to me, whereas if I could, say, just copy my Out of Office exceptions, that would be just dandy.

    I don't have a blackberry either, since the company won't stump for the server or data package, but at least it has (I think) that sort of filtering.

  1. 21  Chris Whisonant http://www.bleedyellow.com/blogs/lotusnut |

    @20 I manage my filtering with mail rules in the Client. BB does have some filtering options, but I've always found mail rules to work better for me. And I was mostly talking about Traveler for iPhone. ;)

  1. 22  Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com |

    @19 The iPhone is a completely different situation because we've chosen to use 100% of the built-in implementation (with all the pluses and minuses of that approach). The speed of implementation is dependent on more than the technology.

    @ED and @3 in our latest testing Traveler "nearly" works useably with the N97 after upgrading the Traveler to 8.5.0 FP1.

    The only remaining *major* issue for us is the inability of the home-screen email notification to notify of new messages on the N97.
