Nokia continues to aggressively promote Lotus Notes Traveler as part of the "Nokia for Business" messages.  The Notes Traveler message is popping up in places like Ovi Store ads in the Zurich airport, print and online media, etc.

Now Nokia has further amplified this message with their Nokia for Business website, specifically the messaging products page:

    It really is good that Traveler is now bundled on phones like the E72 as it makes it really easy to install and get going.

    However, what I didn't realise was that Traveler, when installed through the "Email" application (which is the same process for setting up Mail for Exchange, Google, and the likes) still relies on the old messaging application on Symbian and not the newer Intellisync-sourced Email client which is much friendlier and supports HTML emails.

    The end result is a sub-par experience for the Notes user when compared to what he would get from an Exchange server.

    Presumably the limitation is forced by the Traveler application running on the Domino server (and possibly Domino itself and its reliance on Notes Rich Text and not HTML)? Are there any plans to change this?

    Customers of mine who have evaluated Traveler against ActiveSync still prefer the latter because of the support for modern-day standards.

    I have been involved in the beta programs for Traveler and am grateful for that, but Ed, do you know if there are any plans to better incorporate Traveler into the Nokia Email app?

    @1 I have heard this feedback elsewhere recently. I don't think it has anything to do with Domino, because Domino can certainly serve up HTML mail (as in Domino Web Access and in the Blackberry BES experience). Let me ask my team to get a real response.

    Great news coming from IBM and Nokia, Ed.

    Do you know if the Traveler support works with recent but older Nokia phones like the E90 Communicator? I've had customers ask but I'm not sure where to get the specifics.

    My apologies. I clicked through the link and found what I needed. Thanks.

    @1 - Alan, Traveler uses the default email client for the installed device, so on Nokia this means the basic mail client. On Windows Mobile it's the same, as it is on Apple iPod and iPhone - Traveler delivers to the default mail app.

    I can't count the number of Nokia SDK devices I have broken trying to get the Symbia OS 'default' mail client to be the full-featured mail offering from Nokia.

    The flip side is, in Australia - where data is still extremely expensive - it's great for me that Traveler with the basic mail client only gets 2k of data per hit. I have a 150mb plan with my carrier and haven't been over 30% of my allowance using Traveler + basic mail.

    When I initially installed the OVI mail client with IMAP against my Domino server, the mail CLIENT rendered all the HTML mail messages I received and I blew my monthly data allowance in just a couple of weeks.

    The client rendering the HTML mail has nothing to do with your Domino server configuration, unless you have modified it so that your server translates ALL mail to plain text on it's way to the users mail file.

    Hopefully at some point in the future you will be able to configure Traveler to use whatever mail client you have installed on the device. At that point I hope that you will still be able to choose, as I personally do not need "pretty" email draining my monthly data allowance.

    @3 : Traveler 8.5.1 supports the following versions

    * Series 60 3rd edition

    * Series 60 3rd edition feature pack 1

    * Series 60 3rd edition feature pack 2

    * Series 60 5th edition

    So if your E90 runs on one of those, you are OK.

    Roberto, the E90 uses Symbian 9.2 with S60 3.1 (3rd edition feature pack 1). It should be supported. For a full list of S60 devices check this page:

    @3 - no problems, tested on E90 and E51. BTW - any chance there would be a port to Nokia n900? My boss all of a sudden went for it and since the inbuilt mail app is unusable with Domino IMAP Traveler could be the best solution here...

    I have been using Traveler on an E71 (the one before the E72 but almost identical), and have been very happy about just how easy it was to setup and use.

    Plus when customers see it they go oh you have a Blackberry... and I grin and say oh no, just standard nokia phone.. let me show you.. and another customers buys into Traveler. And the IT techs get sold because they can use the snacky iPhones to.

    Traveler in my Nokia N95 change my life. Just do not sync with Gmail (using mail for exchange) and Traveler together to avoid "loosing your hair".

    Traveler was easy to setup on my E72 and works nicely, albeit no HTML. This is definitely not a server side problem: I also use Touchdown by Nitrodesk on a Motorola Droid/Milestone to sync with Traveler and it serves up beautiful HTML emails. Touchdown provides much deeper functionality around what you sync, when you sync, etc than Nokia's implementation on the E72.

    I gave up using the built-in Nokia client (the newer intellisync-sourced one) for my gmail as it also wouldn't give me HTML (clicking on the HTML link resulted in nothing), and installed Profimail instead. It is not free, but it delivers full HTML emails from webmail servers such as gmail.

    Have also managed to get a Palm Pre to sync with Traveler using its built-in email client, and it also provides HTML format. Need one website redirect on the Traveler server to make the Pre work. See here: { Link }

    Traveler should work on E90 as well, download Nokia's Mail for Exchange client for the E90.
