Ed,
I work for Bank Of America and today we started using Microsoft Communicator in place of Lotus Notes. The Microsoft Communicator interface really sucks (I haven't used any of the features yet).
I am not sure of the reason behind the whole migration in Bank Of America.
Cya,
Andy

@2 Do you mean Communicator in place of Sametime Connect r do you mean you started using Outlook? I thought you guys had been Outlook for years and new a migration to LCS was planned away from Sametime.

Is it me or is this ZIP file impossible to download ? I have been trying for 2 days for the ZIP version to download and it just will not - it sticks at 3%. Is there another link I can download from ? Thanks in advance!

Any hope on getting this document in printable format (e.g. PDF, Word, etc.)? I usually print the documents, readthem cover to cover several times, then use them as reference in the office.

It's in the works - the other ND7 dbs are in the pipe ahead of this one already, but all are being processed. Can't give ya a date right now. Check back at the site.

Dear Ed Brill,
As much as I like your blog, and you providing a ZIP version of the upgrade help, I would have liked a lot more GZIP compression by the R7 server for ordinairy databases. As R7 is aimed at improving server performance, I would have expected this long wished functionality to be there.
Why would it only function for DWA? How hard would it be to enable this through a notes.ini setting for all databases? As a developer, it feels like IBM doesn't take me seriously.
GZIP would speed up the speed of our websites, and thus speed up the time we develop websites and thus free our time to attract more customers to the Notes platform.

I can't say I've had that many people ask me for this "long wished functionality" and why its exclusion would make you feel that IBM doesn't take you seriously. Also just because something is built in DWA doesn't mean it is easily extensible to the entire Domino platform...unfortunately.
There are third parties that offer capabilities to provide compression in all Domino apps, such as the Whale eGap appliance. You might want to check those out.

Ed, you could also say, that gzip is indeed long overdue, that is has been developed but could not be shipped as QA fumbled it.

The fact that third parties are developing applications seems to imply there is demand for it.
Also, how much effort does IBM put in performance? How many red books and articles have been written about it?
If you would ask 10 developers or users how important fast rendering of pages is, 9 out of 10 would consider it very important. If you have something to sell on the web, impatient people click on the next hit in Google if your page doesn't render fast enough. Not all questions are asked, some questions you have to ask yourself.
I can understand not too many developers ask for gzip specifically, I only find out the importance after four years of deloping. It doesn't mean developers prefer slow rendering of html pages.
Most people expect something that has been deloped more than 7(!) years { Link } should be in Notes by now.
The object of my post was to try to find out how easy it would be to extend gzip to all notes databases. Thank you for indicating it isn't as easy as I would have hoped. Hope it will become available soon though in 7.0.1 ;-)

When will gzip be officially available?
This is a long asked for feature that all competitors have had for years.
