Carl got to it first, but I get to be more specific...

a PUBLIC BETA for Notes/Domino 8.5 will begin shortly (within a couple of weeks, late May or early June), where we will unveil the latest beta versions of the Notes 8.5 client for Windows, Linux, Mac OS X and Citrix, as well as, Domino 8.5 server for Windows (32 & 64bit), AIX (32 & 64bit), Linux, Solaris, and System i (newly renamed to just i).
Let's just say that no matter which user group meeting in Europe you are attending the week of 2 June (week 23), you should have some shiny new objects to check out

Interesting that you explicitly mention 64bit for a number of platforms, but not for Solaris. That is definitely not coming?

  1. 2  Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com |

64-bit Solaris is not in the current plan for 8.5.

  1. 3  Turtle http://www.weightlessdog.com/shell.nsf |

Yeah, the Solaris Release Lag is a big sticking point around here with us, as most of my dev servers and all of my production units are Suns. We just went through a royal PITA with the upgrade to Quickr and it'd be nice if we could test out Solaris as early as possible. Testing the Windows release really doesn't cut it because 90% of the snags we've had in the past on upgrades weren't snags with our code, they were snags with the OS and the Solaris build.

Solaris is supported, Turtle, just not the 64-bit compliation.

Ed - Very nice to hear.

Since it will be Eclipse based for the Mac, does this mean we finally get Java *applet* support on the Mac?

And who is the person that keeps renaming the mid-range computers? :)

AS/400 then iSeries then System i now just i

My summer weekend will be spent indoor... My wife is not going to like it. :P

    Great to hear that!

    Sweeeet!

I can't wait to see if xpages will cut the mustard.

ED - 8.5 Designer & Admin client included in this beta?

  1. 9  Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com |

    @9 Yes.

  1. 10  Henry Ferlauto http://www.geniusinside.com |

    @9 - You're talking to yourself again. :)

Get your fire extinguisher out, Ed.

  1. 12  John Turnbow http://www.navasoata-unified.com |

YES!!! Thanks for the notice Mr. Brill!

@11 I prefer the Iron Man armor ... fire proof, bullet proof, and hides your identity ...

  1. 14  Sarah Lachance  |

@5 - The ability to embed a Java applet in a Notes doc will not be supported on the Mac in 8.5. If your question is around other flavors of Java Applets, let us know and we can look into it.

This is great news. But, where are you at with this puppy syncing with a iPhone?

  1. 16  J.Franchetti  |

At Admin2008 they showed Notes 8.5 having a DWA "ultra-light" that is iPhone friendly. Not a true iphone app or local syncing tool, though the screenshots looked impressive.

"PUBLIC BETA to start VERY soon!!" That's what I say while I wait for 8.0.1 to launch each morning :) Looking forward to zippier launch times with 8.5

  1. 18  Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com |

You won't have to wait for 8.5 for zippier launch times - coming in 8.0.2.

  1. 19  Erik Brooks  |

HECK. YEAH. Tell Tate, Andrew, and the rest of the web server support team to get ready. I'm all over this thing. The 8.5 web server envelope shall be officially PUSHED.

And 8.5 Designer will be part of the public beta too, right?

  1. 20  Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com |

@15 Can't say yet, what is your Apple rep telling you?

  1. 21  Stuart Mcintyre http://blog.collaborationmatters.com |

    Woohoo excellent news...

  1. 22  John Bowersox http://john.bsox.us |

Great news. A downside to leaving IBM is that I don't get to play with all the latest and greatest releases of the Notes client. Looking forward to the updates 8.5 brings.

Does anybody have any idea of what version of the Dojo toolkit will be shipping with the beta?

  1. 24  Lynne   |

Will 8.5 bring back the one work month view (no weekends) and the ability to open an entire application, not just the doc in the app, in a new window? Notes 7 had both these features, 8.01 does not and I miss both.

  1. 25  Nathan T. Freeman http://nathan.lotus911.com |

@23 - Of course someone does. Unfortunately, it's not the one that doesn't suck. But that's because that one hasn't been written yet.

And the direct answer is 1.1.1

  1. 26  Peter Wilson  |

Will Notes 8.5 be multi-threaded? ie. open a database on a remote server and it doesn't lockup

    Pete

  1. 27  Erik Brooks  |

@25 - Thanks. I've been spending a lot of time working with Dojo and analyzing the JS source. I wouldn't necessarily say it "sucks", but it's definitely not stellar.

My biggest concern is what IBM's involvement with the toolkit will be moving forward. Can I open support tickets against it? Is IBM still contributing code to the toolkit (e.g. to tackle said support tickets)?

Oh, and for anybody that hasn't checked it out, the Dojo documentation is flat-out *awful*. I'm fairly familiar with parts of the Dojo source, but that's only because the documentation is so bad in some areas that analyzing the source is the only way to determine how something works. Is IBM going to donate some man-hours to that?

Will we be seeing the Quickr and Activities connector/plugin for the Mac client in this 8.5 beta? This is a big problem here - Macs and PCs are not on equal feature parity. If not this 8.5 beta, then when?
