Overviews of Lotus Notes Traveler and Domino 8.0.1
September 19 2007
One of yesterday's announcements related to Notes/Domino 8.0.1 was Lotus Notes Traveler, a new set of Domino capabilities to support mobile devices out-of-the-box. Initial support is for Windows Mobile devices, providing mail, calendar, address book, journal, and to-do list support.
The marketing team has an overview page up on the IBM website at ibm.com/lotus/lotusnotestraveler, including some initial screen shots of the capabilities.
Rob Ingram has also blogged about some of the new 8.0.1 server features over on DominoBlog.com. One of those highlighted during the Collaboration Summit keynote is a new compression algorithm to provide 35%+ reduction in storage space for Domino mail files. As Rob Notes:
This compression effort had originally been planned for delivery in Domino Next release, but the results of the work were so significant that we wanted to get this benefit in the hands of all customers as early as possible.Notes/Domino 8.0.1 is planned for Q1 2008.

Ed,
Thanks for posting the link to the Traveler site! I know the site mentions that it will initially support Windows Mobile devices, but do you know if there is talk about Palm based devices?

Hello Ed,
this sounds like a BlackBerry competition to me. Will IBM Lotus Notes Traveler support also encrypted emails and Calendar entry's? Because encrypted emails work with BB but no encrypted calendar entry's... so Lotus Notes Traveler would be my choice :).

Ed, this is most excellent news. I will be posting about this myself, but this was my BIG bug to bear against Lotus recently. Is there a beta program? Can I get on it please??

First off I'll second interest in Palm. I also think support on iPhone would be nice but I guess aside from just straight browser use that would be something Apple needs to deal with.
@3 - I see it as a competitor to BES sortof, since BES is centered on their devices. This works with WinMobile which expands the reach of ND.
Excellent news overall, 2008 is going to be fun in this space.

I'd be interested to know if there are any plans to support the iPhone later. We are expecting a lot of questions from Lotus customers when the iPhone launches in Europe in November...

That is great news! I hope Traveler will also support Symbian (=Nokia) devices. They may not be widely used in the US but as Volker's post ({ Link } ) shows (provided the stats are correct) these devices are widely used in the rest of the world.

My Sony Ericsson cell phone (not wm) supports something called IMAP IDLE (most recent Nokia's do as well). This allows me to get reliable push email direct to my phone's built in email client from my ISP's mail server (Notes servers don't support this up to 8.0). Are there any plans to support IMAP IDLE with 8.0.1??
- 11
Henning Heinz | 9/19/2007 12:48:06 PM
The solution works as a server-add in task (read no Websphere required) and is using IMAP to communicate with the device. Without going into too many details I think this can well be IMAP idle then (although not long ago I read that nearly no corporate is using IMAP).
I like the solution and how it is going to be implemented.

@all - thanks for comments regarding other platforms for the future. No additional plans have been made at this time, I think we'd like to get the first release out the door.
I expect as far as beta that this will be part of the 8.0.1 beta -- which early builds have actually gone out already to design partners. I will check into details of a more broadly-available beta.

Fantastic news! As you know from our conversations last year this is a huge win. Can't wait to see it in action.

Does anybody know whether this will be bundled with Domino 8.0.1? We are currently using mSuite from Commontime which i basically the same (or looks very much the same..) as the Lotus Notes Traveler with the added plus of mForms. It also supports WM, Symbian and Palm platforms.. So the only advantage at the moment would be if this is to be bundled and therefore included in the Domino license..

hopefully it is not bugy like easysync!!!

I sure hope that Symbian will be there soon. Considering that Windows Mobile phones have only 4-5% of the business market in Scandinavia (Symbian 60-70%)and that WinMobile is almost non-existent in the combined Business phone/Domino sphere.
The only ones to gain from the WinMobile only support are Microsoft and their phone-partners-in-crime.

Re: Symbian vs. Windows Mobile
Look at the ww market shares, and you will understand why a North-American product manager would choose Windows Mobile and miss the rest of the world: { Link }
Since Nokia has licensed ActiveSync, Symbian phones can connect to Exchange servers. Maybe IBM can work with Nokia as well.

@19 This is not about having a North American point of view.

Disclaimer, I work for a BlackBerry Alliance Partner. Anyway, I guess this it to keep up with Exchange 2007 and its "built in" mobile ability for WM. As mentioned by someone above, I hope it somewhat better than EasySync. What is interesting is that since Motorola bought Good they have since discontinued Symbian support, so AFAIK there is no Domino solution (except mNotes) for that segment.
Both BlackBerry and Good are NOC (Network Operation Center) based.
How long will the free BES for Domino (with 10 CALs) remain on the BB site now? ;)

RIM benifits from more mobile users , people will see how unstable the MS Mobile devices generally are more will be pushed towards RIM.

@22, I was more wondering about the special relationship RIM and IBM have been having, and would RIM yank the freebies because of this move. I whole heartedly agree about the devices and the overall instability of (any) MS app/dev/etc.
One of the successes we have had is to dangle free BB for 10 and get people to try out Domino for that reason. Hopefully that rich "coal seem" will not be endangered by this.

Cant see why they should , there is a still a long way from a press release to a proven stable secure product.

@17 - a lot of people make comments like this, but I've used EasySync for years on a series of Palms and never experienced any problems.

marco foellmer http://www.ebf.de | 9/20/2007 3:19:46 PM
what about security? Is traveler using port 1352?
Will there be a Websphere in the middle of the chain?
I'm curious about it.
- 27
Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com | 9/20/2007 3:37:50 PM
@26 NO it is NOT WebSphere -- why would you think that!
"Runs directly in the Domino server as a task "
It doesn't run on port 1352, but it does use SSL over the wire.

This is great, an update to easysync(I agree with DAZ its not as bad as people say in fact it only caused me headaches once in all these years and that was part my fault).
And an update of DEQS/STEQS or Domino Everyplace ideas brought to today's push mail world.
It probably did have something to do with MS bungling it with Exchange but in light of everything else coming out now it is just great news and I too would like to beta it for my clients.
Can we get it in partnerworld?

@23 - "I was more wondering about the special relationship RIM and IBM have been having, and would RIM yank the freebies because of this move."
I just spent a day in a room with a RIM rep going over future Domino plans. I would describe their further intentions with Domino integration as "extensive." Perhaps even "intimate."
Really, if the announcement of Traveler is driving them away from the platform, their association with Lotus dev is not reflective of that.

Charles Robinson http://cubert-codepoet.blogspot.com | 9/20/2007 11:24:42 PM
@27 - There is a precedent of some new functionality that could be delivered on Domino requiring Websphere so we've learned to ask before making any assumptions. I took Marco's comment to mean he simply wanted clarification. Sometimes a cigar is just a cigar. :-)

Ed,
Travler looks great! Will need to work with it to really see how it performs. Especially glad to see that Journal is finally getting the respect it deserves.
Keep up the GREAT work,
