Congrats to Adam and the team. Just be sure and first install and test 7.5 in a test environment but, you already know that.

  1. 2  Hans Bornich  |

Uhoh - something nerdy for the weekend then :-) Congrats on what looks to be a great release!

  1. 3  Chris Miller http://www.IdoNotes.com |

You are kidding me right? Nope, apparently not

  1. 4  David Schaffer http://bloginprogress.us |

It looks like the "limited use" 7.5 isn't posted yet; only 7.0 shows up on my Passport Advantage.

  1. 5  Mike Brown  |

Is it Windows only, or Linux there too? I know the Mac version's been put back.

    Cheers,

    - Mike

@5 I know the Linux Client is there.

Ed, we use two vendors(Cisco, Tandberg) that IBM has shown demos for plugins for 7.5. Do we get those plugins from IBM, the vendor, or have to create them ourselves?

  1. 7  Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com |

@6 that part is still being finalized. There's some discussion of how WebSphere Portal does the Portlet catalog, and whether to use that model or a different one. Stay tuned.

  1. 8  Joerg Hochwald http://blog.hochwald.net |

Downloaded and installed on our Windows and Solaris boxes... Seems to work fine.

No Problems with Webclient, Sametimeclient and BlackBerry (Enterprise Messenger).

  1. 9  Jim Knight http://www.lavatech.com |

    What's the mac client status?

  1. 10  Volker Weber http://vowe.net |

    Beta until sometime in 2007.

  1. 11  Ben Rose http://www.jaffacake.net |

    Just to confirm...

Are my users licensed to use this client with the Notes 6.5 licensing? Or must a full sametime license be purchased?

  1. 12  Mike Brown  |

The Sametime Connect 7.5 client downloads are also available at the Sametime Demo site { Link } for Linux and Windows.

No mention at all of the Mac client beta there now though. Will that be where it is when the Sametime guys return from their "breather", Ed.

    Cheers,

    - Mike

Very cool! I like the chat history and some of the other cool stuff. Very Nice!

But Ed.... Please...can you see if you or someone else can fund dual monitors for some of the developers or usablity lab folks???. It seems none of the products that Lotus puts out deal with dual monitors properly. For once (cough, choke) MS does it the right way! If I close IE on my right hand screen, any new browser windows popup over on the right screen. Want to move it to the left screen? Close IE on the left screen and it knows to use that screen from now on. It can't be the video drivers like tech support tells us or IE would have the same issues.

With dual monitors ST pops up screens on both the left and right sides ... the banner screen on left, login on right, incoming chats on left. !!!ARGHHHH!!! At least when I go to Schedule a meeting from the 7.5 Connect clinet, IE knows what screen to use for the Meeting Center. At least it is better than ST 6.5 which would either lock up your Connect client or use the middle of the two screens if you tried to move if off the screen it wanted to use.

  1. 14  Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com |

@11 Sametime 7.5 requires a full Sametime license. In Notes "Hannover", the limited license chat functions will be integrated with the then-current version of Sametime, but for now, this is a separate release that requires the separate Sametime license.

  1. 15  Paul S  |

Am I the only one concerned? Beta 4 was released only about two weeks ago. I've been using the beta 4 drop for less than half that time and still noticed several bugs. I will be pleasantly surprised if two weeks has been sufficient time to squash the remaining bugs.

    -Paul

  1. 16  Dan Holzrichter  |

Converted the RPM with alien and it installed with no problems. Very cool.

  1. 17  John Mikels  |

What's the deal with the heavy memory use? ST7.5 is using more memory on the Notes is on my system (and that is saying ALOT!).

  1. 18  Mathias Persson  |

Unfortunately this is what I get at the Passport Online Site...

"The site is currently not available due to scheduled maintenance activities. From Aug 18 2006 , 5:00PM EST to Aug 20 2006, 8:00PM EST. Please come back later

    We apologize for any inconvenience.

    Thank you."

    What bad timing!

  1. 19  Mike Brown  |

@17 I think that's the price to pay for Eclipse based stuff. Expect the Hannover client to have a large memory footprint too, which is one reason that there will be a standard (or should we call that "classic"?) Notes 8 client, alongside the Hannover one.

I'm hoping that there'll be some kind of component sharing to compensate for this. So if you've got Hannover and Sametime 7.5 both loaded, they will share a lot of code, and you won't have a full doubling up of memory usage. I'm only guessing though; I don't know all that much about Eclipse.

    Cheers,

    - Mike

  1. 20  Volker Weber http://vowe.net |

    > you won't have a full doubling

If you run Hannover AND Sametime, you will. You cannot share between two Java VMs. If you only run Hannover and the plugins within the client, then they will run in the same VM.

  1. 21  Henning Heinz  |

Firefox has no problem to get beyond 100 MB within minutes, at least on Windows.

And when Vista arrives I think we all will get an impression of a real large memory footprint.

As long as it does not consume too much CPU time like some weird Adobe Flash stuff I do not see a problem.

But I think I still need to read more of Carl Tylers blog to get infected by the Sametime virus.

  1. 22  David Price  |

@14 Does this mean that my Notes or HTTP client can use chat with a Sametime 7.server 5 but the standalone Sametime 7.5 client requires a license?

  1. 23  Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com |

@22 that sounds like the right interpretation.

  1. 24  Volker Weber http://vowe.net |

Henning, that does not surprise me much. If you look at loads of pictures for instance, and I have been told that people do this, they have to be uncompressed and rendered. Which takes up a lot of memory.

  1. 25  David Bell  |

@20 - the point here is that the IM experience in Hannover will be using the same ST7.5 components, so you should not need to run both together.

  1. 26  Volker Weber http://vowe.net |

David, that is a possibility. However, I expect IBM to deliver things in Sametime that are not in Notes, if only to sell Sametime.

  1. 27  Stuart McIntyre http://macsfacts.blogger.com |

Apologies for being lazy and not reading the documentation, but does this release of Sametime supported partitioned servers? I know there were lots of bugs in earlier versions that stopped Sametime on partitioned servers being reliable...

  1. 28  Irv Schor http://www.stonhard.com |

'Entitlement' licensing is very confusing in this situation. We have Domino 7 and are entitled to use Sametime for IM/Presense awareness within the mail file. We want to move to Linux, but have been on 'hold' until ST for Linux was out. Now that it is here it seems like your're saying we would now need to pay for Sametime IM 7.5? This doesn't make any sense. Can someone please clarify. ...Remember IBM, the 'wrong' answer = less Linux boxes out there for Domino = more Windows Servers. So, what's it gonna be?

  1. 29  Sean Harris  |

Ed, where should we be watching for the formal release announcement?

  1. 30  Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com |

@28 This is a good question (though, perhaps, not asked with the kind of tone that encourages conversation). I need to find out. In theory, you would NOT be entitled to use the Sametime Linux client under the limited entitlement. But since there is no integrated awareness in the Notes 7 client for Linux, I wonder if IBM would waive that restriction.

    I'll ask.

  1. 31  Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com |

    shoot, that's a malformed link. www-306.ibm.com/common/ssi/OIX.wss?DocURL={ Link }

  1. 33  Volker Weber http://vowe.net |

    You may want to try this: { Link }

  1. 34  Volker Weber http://vowe.net |

    And here is an IBM link, that works: { Link }

  1. 35  Irv Schor http://www.stonhard.com |

@30 Ed, My sincere apologies about the tone, which was only meant to be more of a joke than sarcasm (trust me, my jokes never go over well!!). Based on your response, my question needs further clarification: We have Windows Notes 7.0.1 clients on Windows 2003 servers running Domino 7.0.1. I've been asked to change the Windows servers to Linux, but would like to run Sametime as well so our Windows Notes clients have the free entitlement of online presense awareness/IM. Does our current Sametime entitlement permit that?

  1. 36  Ben Rose http://www.jaffacake.net |

    Some thoughts { Link }

  1. 37  Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com |

@35 oh on the SERVER side -- you could, but we haven't shipped the Linux version of the Sametime server yet. Coming in 2007.

  1. 38  Sean Harris  |

    @36

Wow, I totally forgot about that . . . you're absolutely right. One of them is out of sync, and it's about to throw off the whole Lotus space time continuum.

Since they added a whole bunch of new features (Steve's blog template, NOMAD, SAP, RSS, and more), in addition to fixes, they should name it (7.0.2) 7.5. This woiuld re-balance the universe and bring stability to the the planet (depending on what scientists are defining as a planet these days ;^ )

  1. 39  Wolfgang Haderlein  |

    Ed,

can you confirm this information { Link } or FUD made by IBM?

Is this the way IBM is committing to the domino platform?

    Wolfgang

    Hello,

sorry for my last post with my nickname ;) I want to tell you that ST 7.5 looks incredibly nice... good job !

I want to know if there is a release date for the MSN, ICQ gateway so I only use Sametime and no other IM client.

    Best Regards.

  1. 44  Ed Brill http://www.edbrill.com |

@43 no MSN integration has been announced. ICQ I think is done through AOL integration, which is still "coming soon". I can't give a specific date but it is the very next 7.5 deliverable.

  1. 45  Brian Baum  |

What happened to the desktop sharing capability(without creating a meeting)with Sametime?

  1. 46  Ragz  |

    Awesome looking!!

I want to try sametime client on Linux. Can any one point me to the RPM for installing. I tried searching for "Linux sametime-connect-lin-7.5.0-1.i386.rpm" but no luck. Please point me to the RPM location.

    Thanks for the help,

    Amarnadh.

  1. 49  Adam Gartenberg http://www.adamgartenberg.com |

Amarnadh - I'll follow up with you directly on that.

  1. 50  Sachin Hukkeri  |

I have the same problem as mentioned by Amarnadh Sai above. I need an installable of Sametime Connect for Linux.

Please let me know where I can find the "Linux sametime-connect-lin-7.5.0-1.i386.rpm".

Your help would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,

    Sachin

  1. 51  Adam Gartenberg http://www.adamgartenberg.com |

The Sametime clients are packaged together along with the server code - so if you are going to be deploying on a Windows server, for example, download the Windows server assembly for Sametime from Passport Advantage, and in there you will find the download for the client.

Please feel free to follow up with me directly if you are still having trouble and I'd be glad to help.

  1. 52  Sachin Hukkeri  |

Thanks Adam for your response. I got what I was looking for.

    Thanks again!
