Stuart McIntyre always manages to find the exciting new nuggets.  Symphony 1.3 is now in IBM internal beta, and I'm running it here on my Mac.  As we get closer to release, the Symphony team has published a video highlighting the new features of the release, which include:

    * Support for reading Office 2007 file formats
    * Support for widgets and Live Text
    * Support for network connection hyperlinks for URI protocols
    * New clip art
    * Enhanced animation effects in Symphony Presentations
    * Improved DataPilot functionality in Symphony Spreadsheets
    * The ability to create and print envelopes, and enhancements to outline-level numbering styles in Symphony Documents

    Live Text + Widgets in Symphony = BRILLIANT!! I love it! Click-to-call or Google map out of a spreadsheet, definition look-ups out of a document, product look-ups out of a catalog--the possibilities are awesome.

    Do the live text recognizers work on Office documents opened in Symphony or native docs only? Can't wait to try it!

    Another good step forward. Looking forward to v2.0 (???) when the macro function will be there and offer competitiveness for the high-end users; which would allow entire organizations to switch.

    On the personal note, I would like to see "Draw" from OpenOffice integrated into Symphony.

    DataPilot - I wonder if Susteen has tried to sue IBM for use of that name. They make the cell phone data migration tool called, "DataPilot." (Which does work fabulously. Great application if you have a cell phone that needs to be backed-up.)

    @1 - in the build of Notes 8.5.1 I have, I opened up a Word document, my name appeared as Live Text and clicking invoked a search (as it does from a Notes e-mail). Also worked with a UK post code.

    Features in final products may be subject to change (covers back-side).

    MS Office 2007 compatibility is an important feature--we would have more seriously considered Symphony had they considered this earlier on (we ended up buying a newer MS Office instead, already).

    Good for you, Lotus!
