What I learned at IBM Software University, day 1
January 16 2006
Well, I learned a lot of things today, but some of the really cool things included:
- Lotusphere 2006 registration is up vs. 2005...I'll leave the exact numbers for next week
- A significant portion of the business partners attending Lotusphere are doing so for the first time, or for the first time in 3 or more years
- WebSphere Portal gained over 500 new customers in 2005
- Lotus Notes/Domino gained a whole bunch of new customers in 2005...I'll save the exact number for next week
- A luxury automotive manufacturer consolidated Domino and Exchange environments to Domino in 2005
- There will be more IBM software salespeople selling Lotus software in 2006 than in 2005, a sign of IBM's continuing/renewed investment in Lotus
- without seeing the Notes "Hannover" and Sametime 7.5 demos...those are coming up in the morning
- without hearing 2005 full-year results, since IBM has not yet announced Q4 2005 earnings...those are coming up after close of business tomorrow

I think the difference this year, is the Boot Camp and for us the Pound vs the Dollar!! It's a lot easier to justify Lotusphere with the Bootcamp, and when comparing prices, it works out to be on a par with European type events.
For me, this is my primary technical event for the year. One I'm looking forwarding to being my first ever Lotusphere.
The Lotusphere Journal is a godsend!!! Well done Ben!I've planned all my schedule this morning with it.
Lastly, Domino, business wise is on the up.. We've won around 300 days worth of Domino business in the last 2 months, with recently a Global R7 Upgrade..
To coin a phrase, the future's bright the futures yellow :-)

We were almost threatened over here in Las Vegas not to talk about all the new good stuff we hear and see. But... be sure to see the Hannover and Sametime 7.5 demo next week at 'sphere. It's impressing!

Shame I'm not in Vegas (hmmm) but what a treat to spend my birthday at home for the first time in God-knows-how-many years.
The Lotusphere schedule is awesome - not surprised that attendance is up. I eventually got round to planning which sessions I wanted to attend last night. Like I used to say of the Lotus Tech Forum in Boston, the mark of a great event is when you're left annoyed that you can't attend everything you want to. I used Mr Langhinrichs' Lotusphere Journal to plan my schedule, added desirable sessions to my diary, and ended up quadruple-booked at times. But don't worry Ed, I'll be at your sessions (at the front, heckling).
