I'm sitting in INV101, "Notes Domino 'Hannover' and Beyond".  Lots of good stuff -- I'll probably update this entry a few times.

Kevin Cavanaugh is showing the Notes plug-in 7.0.1 running on the IBM Workplace Managed Client 2.6 on a RedHat Linux desktop.  This will go to beta shortly.  Cool.

Other things mentioned in this session:

  • Domino Next will support message recall
  • Domino Next will have 64-bit support in beta, but 32-bit architecture will continue to be supported.  This becomes key because Domino customers know how to leverage their investments -- I met a customer yesterday who runs their Domino environment on servers that have been in place for 5+ years.
  • "Hannover" is being built for Macintosh simultaneously with the Windows code
  • "Spamguru" is enhanced anti-spam capability which will be in Domino Next.

Is deploying the Workplace managed client from a Domino server going to be included soon? 7.0.2?

@1 That's part of the core design of the Domino server in the "Hannover" timeframe, not in the 7.0.x timeframe.

Well that's undoubtedly good news, Ed, and I look forward to trying out the beta. But, wasn't the Notes plug-in on Linux demo'd at LS04? That's one long gestation period before it even gets into beta...

    @3...

Nope... On LS04 you saw a Notes Plug-in on demo on Windows, with the promise of having a version for linux. Not linux version was showed, only a very first proof of concept under a Win Station. A major effort have been done since them, porting a lot of code to linux....

Beta is then avaiable internally since october....(currently at beta 2) and more than 8000 IBMers are using it and working perfectly with a Linux pure station, no WINE at all, with Notes plugin, and IBM Productivity Tools..... I have to say that beta 2 running smoothy and better than Notes on Wine.. (I am one of the proud beta testers of the product)

Honestly, a Notes plugin for the WMC on Linux, while probably valuable for some small group of people out there, is not what 99.9% of people would think when you say "Notes on Linux". It looks like Linux users will need to wait until Hannover for realistic client support.

  1. 7  Ed Brill www.edbrill.com |

@6 well, Hannover architecturally for Notes/Linux isn't fundamentally that different than Notes + WMC today.

Why do you think that it's not an acceptable solution?

  1. 8  Jonathan Walkup http://www.thewalkups.net/weblogs/jonsworld.php |

Oh, I think Hannover looks great. But the 7.0.1 plugin solution is probably not what most people would consider as "Notes on Linux". The high barrier to entry imposed by installing WCS is not insignificant.

  1. 9  Ed Brill www.edbrill.com |

@8 you don't NEED the full WCS infrastructure to install/provision the client and plug-in. And Domino Next will have the bits needed to do that provisioning and management. If you take the WCS/server requirement away, does the plug-in architecture work?

@Ed Do you have any idea of a release date for this beta?

  1. 11  Ed Brill www.edbrill.com |

Not sure on a public beta. I can get you nominated for the initial limited beta, please send me mail with details.

So does Hannover include the Notes Design or Admin clients? Or is it just the mail and database client?
